Embracing the Flow of Life: Understanding Pendulation and Its Role in Our Emotional Wellbeing

Life is not meant to be static. We are constantly moving through different emotional and physiological states, shifting between moments of calm and moments of challenge. This natural movement is captured by the concept of pendulation, a key idea in somatics and polyvagal theory. Understanding pendulation helps us see that emotional wellbeing is about flow, not fixation. It shows us how to navigate the ups and downs of life with greater ease and resilience.

What Is Pendulation and Why It Matters
Pendulation describes the natural rhythm of moving back and forth between different states of nervous system activation. We use this concept in my one on one somatic therapy practice and it is deeply connected to polyvagal theory, which explains how our nervous system responds to safety and threat.
We don’t stay in one state all the time. Instead, we oscillate between states of:
Activation (feeling alert, anxious, or stressed)
Calm regulation (feeling safe, grounded, and connected)
Shutdown or freeze (feeling numb, disconnected, or immobilized)
This movement is natural and necessary. It’s like the tide going in and out or the changing seasons. Life is always in constant change and flux. Our bodies and minds too are designed to pendulate, to move through these states in cycles.
Life’s Natural Ebb and Flow
Just as nature cycles through birth, growth, decay, and renewal, our emotional lives follow a similar pattern. We experience moments of joy and connection, followed by times of struggle or pain. These cycles are not only normal but essential for growth.
Staying stuck in any one state—whether it’s constant stress, numbness, or hyperarousal—can harm our wellbeing. When we resist pendulation, we block the natural flow of healing and learning.
For example, after a stressful event, our nervous system needs time to return to a calm state. If we rush this process or avoid feeling our emotions, we may get stuck in anxiety or shutdown. Pendulation encourages us to move through these states, allowing the nervous system to reset and restore balance.
How Pendulation Supports Learning and Growth
Big emotional experiences, moments of feeling stuck, and the return to regulation are all part of how we learn about ourselves. Each cycle teaches us something new:
Activation helps us recognize what challenges or threats we face.
Feeling stuck signals where we need support or change.
Returning to regulation strengthens our resilience and sense of safety.
This process is similar to cycles of death and rebirth in nature. Just as a forest regrows after a fire, we grow stronger after moving through emotional challenges.
My Somatic Approach to Teaching Pendulation
In my somatic practice, I focus on helping people learn how to pendulate intentionally. This means developing awareness of their nervous system states and practicing moving between them in a safe way.
Here are some ways I guide this process:
Body awareness exercises to notice sensations linked to different states.
Breathwork and grounding techniques to help return to regulation.
Safe exploration of emotions to allow activation without overwhelm.
Integration activities like movement, social connection, or creative expression to support the return to calm.
By practicing pendulation, you build a toolkit to manage stress and emotional ups and downs in daily life.
My Personal Aha Moment with Pendulation
Recently, I faced a personal challenge that tested my emotional resilience. At first, I felt overwhelmed and rather stuck between grief and shutdown. Instead of pushing those feelings away, I used pendulation tools to stay present with my emotions.
I spent quiet moments alone, focusing on deep body awareness and breath, and other forms of self soothing to feel my feelings fully. Then, I intentionally shifted to activities that brought me joy and connection—seeing friends, walking in nature, and engaging in hobbies I love. These moments helped stimulate my vagus nerve, supporting my nervous system’s return to regulation.
This experience showed me how powerful pendulation can be. It’s not about avoiding difficult feelings but moving through them and coming back to balance. That cycle helped me grow and feel more grounded. Life is unpredictable and we can't know what it is going to throw at us, but we can build tools to handle whatever it is.
Practical Tips for Practicing Pendulation in Your Life
You can start practicing pendulation with simple steps:
Notice your body sensations throughout the day. Are you tense, relaxed, or somewhere in between?
Allow yourself to feel emotions without judgment. Name them if you can. Self soothing touch can help when these emotions feel really strong.
Use breath and movement to shift your state. Slow, deep breaths can calm activation.
Alternate between rest and activity. Rest supports regulation, while gentle activity helps release stuck energy.
Connect with others when you feel ready. Social engagement is a powerful way to return to safety.
These small practices build your ability to move through emotional states naturally and healthily.
Support Through Somatic Work and Beyond
If you find yourself stuck or overwhelmed, somatic therapy can offer guidance and support. Working with a trained practitioner helps you develop personalized tools for pendulation and nervous system regulation.
Other helpful approaches include:
Mindfulness meditation
Yoga or gentle movement practices
Spending time in nature
Creative expression like art or music
Remember, emotional wellbeing is a journey of movement and change. You don’t have to do it alone. Reach out if you want support learning how to pendulate and embrace the flow of life.
