These days, life seems to be moving at lightning speed, and a lot of us are feeling the constant stress that comes with it. Coupled with the constant barrage of current world events and other individual life stressors, it can all be a lot to manage. This nonstop pressure can wreak havoc on our nervous systems and often leads to ongoing health problems. Figuring out how stress affects us and finding ways to heal our nervous systems can really help life feel more manageable. Especially for those dealing with long-term health issues. Fortunately, there are many ways (some simple and some more complex) that we can come home to our bodies to begin to manage stress. Somatic therapy, which focuses on the body and mind as a unified whole, is a healing modality that helps us get back in touch with our bodies, connect to ourselves more deeply, and ease the load of chronic stress and chronic illness.

How Stress Affects the Nervous System
Stress triggers a natural response in the nervous system known as the fight-or-flight reaction. This response prepares the body to face danger by increasing heart rate, tightening muscles, and releasing stress hormones like cortisol. In the wild, animals (and human animals) usually pair the stress response with an action (fighting or fleeing), but it is not so common for humans to have the outlet in our modern society to do this now. So while this reaction is helpful in short bursts, chronic stress with no stress cycle completion keeps the nervous system in a heightened state for extended periods.
When the nervous system remains activated, it can cause:
Increased inflammation in the body
Disrupted sleep patterns
Muscle tension and pain
Digestive problems
Weakened immune function
Over time, these effects contribute to chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia, autoimmune diseases, and chronic fatigue syndrome and other stress related symptoms and illnesses. An individual's inability to complete a fight/flight stress cycle in the moment the threat is perceived leads to their nervous system’s inability to return to a calm, balanced state. This is one of the main reasons these illnesses persist.
The Link Between Chronic Illness and Nervous System Dysregulation
Many chronic illnesses share a common root: dysregulation of the nervous system. By dysregulation I mean that a person has difficulty moving between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system state fluidly. Their nervous system often gets stuck. This means the system that controls bodily functions becomes stuck in a state of stress or shutdown. For example, people with chronic pain often experience heightened sensitivity to stimuli, a sign that their nervous system is overactive.
Research shows that trauma, whether physical or emotional, can disrupt the nervous system’s ability to regulate itself. This disruption leads to symptoms that are often difficult to treat with medication alone. Patients often report feeling disconnected from their bodies or overwhelmed by sensations they cannot control.
What Is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy focuses on the connection between the mind and body. Unlike traditional talk therapy, somatic therapy focuses on the body and what is happening in the present moment, not just the story the mind is telling.
The somatic therapy I practice focuses on helping you become more familiar with your body and bodily sensations to eventually help you connect to unfelt emotions and complete the stress cycle which was blunted and stored in your body.
By doing so, your nervous system can return to a state of balance, reducing symptoms of stress and chronic illness.
How Somatic Therapy Supports Nervous System Healing
Somatic therapy offers several benefits for you if you are dealing with stress & chronic illness:
Restores nervous system balance by encouraging your body to release stored tension
Improves body awareness, helping you recognize early signs of stress
Enhances relaxation through guided breathing and gentle movement
Supports emotional processing connected to your physical symptoms
Builds resilience to future stressors
For example, a person with chronic back pain might learn to notice subtle muscle tightness and use somatic exercises to release it. Over time, this can reduce pain and improve mobility.
Practical Somatic Techniques to Try
You don’t need to wait for a therapy session to start healing your nervous system. Some simple somatic practices can be done at home:
Grounding exercises: Focus on feeling your feet on the floor and the support beneath you (even better if you're on a natural surface like grass or dirt!). This helps bring awareness to the present moment.
Breath awareness: Slow, deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting calm. (Simple practices like box breathing: inhale, hold, exhale for 4 seconds each)
Gentle movement: Stretching or slow yoga can release muscle tension and improve circulation.
Body scanning: Mentally check in with different parts of your body to notice areas of tightness or discomfort.
These practices encourage the nervous system to shift from a state of stress to relaxation. They also build neuroplasticity (rewiring of our brains) to make feeling your body easier and easier.
When to Seek a Somatic Therapist
While self-help techniques are valuable, working with a trained somatic therapist can provide deeper healing. Working with a guide helps you with go deeper because you are being held in a safe container with a witnessing presence who is guiding your awareness. Somatic therapy works with a concept called pendulation that ultimately leads to an increased capacity to tolerate stress and strong emotions. This allows for you to focus more on your experience and helps you go deeper in a way that matches your capacity.
People who may benefit from professional somatic therapy include those who:
Experience chronic pain or fatigue without clear medical causes
Have a history of trauma or emotional distress
Feel disconnected from their bodies
Struggle with anxiety or panic attacks linked to physical symptoms
Anyone who wishes to be more connected to their emotions and self
A guide can tailor sessions to your individual needs, ensuring safety and effectiveness.
The Bigger Picture: Healing in a Stressful World
The current state of the world—with ongoing social, economic, political, and environmental challenges (to name a few) —means many/most? people carry more stress than ever. I know I feel this as well. Healing your nervous system is not just about treating symptoms but about building resilience and restoring balance.
Somatic therapy offers a practical way to address the root causes of chronic illness related to nervous system stress. It empowers you to take an active role in your healing journey.
